You do not need a hundred page handbook to be protected. You need the right five policies, written clearly and actually followed. Start with anti-harassment and discrimination, at-will employment, time off and sick leave, workplace safety, and a clear complaint procedure.
The mistake most small businesses make is copying a template and never looking at it again. Laws change, your team grows, and yesterday's policy can become today's liability. Review your handbook every year, and every time a new law touches your state.
If you are not sure where your handbook stands, that is exactly what an HR audit is for. A short review now costs far less than a claim later.
